The retail giant is opening a new 43,000-square meter facility at the Goodman Centenary Distribution Centre in Moorebank, a suburb in southwest Sydney, in the second half of 2018 in time for the launch of Amazon Prime.
The said subscription service, which includes free two-day delivery and free music and video streaming, is expected to launch later this year.
“Sydney represents another important development for our growth strategy in Australia, following a steady and progressive increase in customer demand. This new facility builds on the capabilities of our first centre in Dandenong South, allowing us to continue to fulfil our commitment to fast and reliable deliveries for Australian customers,” Robert Bruce, Amazon Australia Operations Director
Amazon Prime Australia Imminent?
Once the new fulfilment center is fully operational, sellers on the Amazon Australia marketplace will no longer have to ship orders themselves, but for now they don’t have much of a choice.
“Eventually Amazon will have multiple warehouses around Sydney, Melbourne and other cities, as well as different types of sites as it grows to support groceries and other special products,” Juozas Kaziukenas, eCommerce Analyst, Marketplace Pulse.
Amazon entered Australia in December last year and continues to gain momentum with its expansion plans. In fact, it will soon begin recruitment for a range of roles, including operations, support and technical specialists, to add to its current workforce of 1,200 Australian employees.
