FedEx Express Warns of Shipping Delays Due to COVID Related Staff Availability and Weather

FedEx Express warns of delays due to the surge of COVID-19 Omicron infections and severe winter weather across the country.

Don’t Miss

The carrier is experiencing a shortage of available crew to staff its FedEx Express air network and the weather is placing strains on its logistics network as well.

“We are implementing contingency plans and adjusting operations to minimize delays while continuing to provide the best possible service to our customers during these difficult times. Volume currently moving through the network will be prioritized for processing.”

FedEx Statement

FedEx Express’s Money-Back Guarantee will remain suspended until January 16, 2022 as part of its holiday peak season exception, which the company instituted on November 1, 2021.

The company did not say if it may extend the suspension of its Money-Back Guarantee but considering the current growth of Omicron COVID-19 cases,  that may be a possibility.

Also, FedEx did not address its ground operations and it appears that part of the business is not as impacted by the weather and rise in COVID-19 cases.

FedEx Priority Freight Impact

Previously paused pick-up for International Priority Freight should resume on Monday, January 10th, and pick-up for Domestic FedEx Express Freight and International Economy Freight is expected to resume on Thursday, January 13th.

For customers that require FedEx Express Freight before these dates, FedEx offered these alternative options:

  • Transition domestic FedEx Express freight volume to FedEx Freight or another LTL carrier.
  • Upgrade critical domestic FedEx Express freight to First Overnight Freight.
  • Select International parcel services in lieu of International Express freight services where possible.

UPS Delays

Rival carrier UPS also is reporting some shipping delays due to weather conditions at its UPS Worldport hub in Louisville, Kentucky.

Unlike FedEx, UPS apparently is not experiencing the level of staff shortages and did not warn of other delays for its air and ground operations.

USPS Delays

The US Postal Service is not reporting network delays right now. Please see our USPS Domestic Disruptions Operations post for the latest updates.

USPS international operations are impacted in other countries for final deliveries. Please see this post for the latest updates.
