Here in the UK it has had a huge effect as over the past few years we have moved more and more towards a cashless society with NFC payments becoming the norm for many.
The VISA Disruption
Whilst out in Manchester today there was chaos in Primark, a budget fashion store as at around 1pm and with queues of people waiting to pay, the card systems went down.
Leaving angry shoppers who had been waiting in line with no alternative to pay as few had the cash available.
Payment processing through Visa’s systems accounts for £1 in £3 of all UK spending, the company has said.
Reports on Twitter from supermarkets around the UK & Europe describe chaotic scenes as shoppers were unable to pay for their essential food items.
So visa and MasterCard have gone down and I kid you not, London has gone into meltdown. Ya’ll it’s the apocalypse.

Some are even speculating as to the cause, which may be a little tongue in cheek…
Mr Putin is sat in his volcano hideout on a black swivel-chair slowly stroking a white cat, smiling wryly. “You can cancel our Visas, but now I shall cancel yours!” Mwhahahaha. #visadown #visa

At the time of publishing the outage was still occurring and causing disruption.
The official update from VISA is:
“Visa is currently experiencing a service disruption which is preventing some Visa transactions in Europe from being processed. It is investigating the cause and acting as quickly as possible to resolve the situation. Visa is working with banks, building societies, merchant acquirers and card providers to return to a normal service and will provide regular updates. Customers should check their bank, building society or card provider website or contact them with any queries.”
At this stage it is too early to fully understand what effect this will have on eCommerce across Europe but something which we are sure will have an effect.
