Savvy eBay Sellers Making Big Money Selling Tupperware Products
With concerns about the financial state of Tupperware, vintage pieces from the company are fetching high prices on eBay and other online marketplaces.
“Tupperware has embarked on a journey to turn around our operations and today marks a critical step in addressing our capital and liquidity position,” said Miguel Fernandez, CEO at Tupperware. “The company is doing everything in its power to mitigate the impacts of recent events, and we are taking immediate action to seek additional financing and address our financial position.”
Yet, the Orlando, Florida-based company has been struggling for some time now as it tries to keep its products relevant with filing for bankruptcy becoming a real possibility. It is unclear what impact such a step would have on the availability of products in the future.
But today, it’s creating a gigantic opportunity for savvy eBay sellers.
According to 9News in Australia, eBay reported a significant surge, upwards of 130% in Tupperware sales since the company revealed its financial struggles earlier this month. The sudden increase in demand can be attributed to the nostalgia for the brand and the fear its most popular products could disappear.
“It gives you some sort of nostalgia, of a time growing up in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s,” QUT Business School Professor Gary Mortimer told 9News in Australia. “Scarcity always drives demand and price.”
For sellers, right now is a good time to dig around the kitchen, as they might have hundreds of dollars of sellable items buyers want. Some of the most wanted items are selling for hundreds of dollars!
Individual vintage salt and pepper shakers sell for over $100 each, and complete sets in rare colors are fetching hundreds of dollars. Alongside these, retro celery crispers are being sold for as much as $50, whereas lettuce keepers and jug-and-cup sets are being sold for $35 to $40 each, 9News reported.
