USPS Domestic Service Disruptions and Post Office Closures – Updated 8/12/2024
KEY POINTS:
- The USPS reports no known widespread disruptions in its logistics network that may affect delivery of mail and packages to all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
- However, Hurricane Debby continues to impact select local areas along the east coast with facility closures and some very localized delivery suspensions.
- There are no known major APO/FPO/DPO disruptions that could impact deliveries of military and diplomatic mail and packages and shipments to U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico or Guam.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) issues industry alerts and social media notices about disruptions and suspensions of domestic services and facilities.
Our USPS Domestic Services tracker covers mail and packages within the contiguous U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories like Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam.
We also include military and diplomatic mail (APO/FPO/DPO) as the USPS considers them domestic services for operational purposes and pricing. Any disruptions to these services will be noted, though once APO/FPO/DPO mail is turned over to the military for international transport, USPS no longer controls its delivery outside the United States.
Some APO/FPO/DPO destined mail and U.S. territories may still need customs forms despite being considered a domestic service for pricing.

Hurricane Debby has impacted logistics routes and operations in the eastern United States, including some facility closures. Please expect some delivery delays and check for facility closures in our list below.

Facility Closure FAQ
Q: I have a post office box (PO Box) at one of the closed facilities. What do I do?
A: Unless otherwise noted, USPS moves Post Office mail to the alternate facility for pick up. You will need to bring a government-issued Photo ID (such as a Driver’s License or Passport) and go to the retail counter of the alternate post office to pick up your mail.
Q: I have a USPS mail pickup notice in my mailbox. What do I do?
A: Check the pick-up location from your notice. In most cases, it will be the alternate pick-up location shown in our listing. However, exceptions may occur that could require you to go to another retail location. If you received the notice before your post office was closed, go to the alternate postal location shown and ask for help. In most cases, they will have your mail item(s). Remember to bring a government-issued Photo ID (such as a Driver’s License or Passport).
Q: How long are temporary closures?
A: Unless USPS offers a re-opening date in its initial closure notice, which we will add to each listing as a note, the temporary closure is until the post office has resumed operations and the listing is removed from our list.
Q: Will a temporary closure impact mail deliveries?
A: Most post offices deliver mail to local customers. Unless we state otherwise, deliveries should continue even if a postal facility is closed. However, there can be exceptions, usually after a storm or other natural disaster, that may make some local areas inaccessible. If the facility closure affects local deliveries, we will add it to the notes for each listing.
Q: Will a temporary closure impact mail pick-ups?
A: See the above answers for deliveries. Unless you have a separate mail pick-up (usually large volume customers), most mail pick-ups are handled by your regular delivery mail carrier.
USPS Military & Diplomatic Mail (APO/FPO/DPO) Service Disruptions
No service disruptions have been reported that are under the control of the United States Postal Service. Military and Diplomatic mail is subject to U.S. military or diplomatic transport, which USPS does not control.
