eBay Launches Authenticity Guarantee for Streetwear

SHARE

eBay has launched its Authenticity Guarantee for Streetwear products on select apparel products in the United States that are sold for $200 or more.

At launch, the company will authenticate new and pre-owned products from Aimé Leon Dore, Supreme, BAPE, Kith, Off-White, Fear of God, Palace, Vetements, and Stone Island.

Only garments in the original state are eligible for this program. eBay will not authenticate products that have been customized or modified in any way from the original item.

Once an item is sold, the seller will ship it to a new state-of-the-art authentication warehouse in New Jersey where it will undergo a comprehensive authentication process which includes a meticulous multipoint inspection.

First, eBay will confirm the listing description matches the product sold and then will perform a thorough physical inspection of the garment’s structure, materials, tags, and logos. The packaging and accessories are also reviewed for authenticity.

However, eBay will accept that packaging material may have minor flaws due to aging, manufacturing flaws, or defects that are uncontrollable by the seller.

Authenticated products will receive an eBay Authenticity Guarantee QR tag that is attached to the garment and programmed with the unique details of each garment before it is shipped to the buyer.

Buyers will be able to track their purchase through the verification progress on eBay’s Purchase History page, enabling them to stay informed about the status of their items throughout the authentication process.

To promote this new authentication service on streetwear, eBay is currently not charging additional fees for the verification process. The company estimates that the average authentication will take about 2 business days after receipt at their facility.

eBay plans to expand this program to more labels and expects by the end of September to include additional brands such as: Adidas, Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, Burberry, Cactus Plant Flea Market, Chrome Hearts, Comme des Garçons, Dior, Eric Emanuel, Fendi, Givenchy, Gucci, Jordan, Louis Vuitton, Nike, OVO, Palm Angels, Prada, Rhude, Versace, and Visvim.

Expanding its Authenticity Guarantee to Streetwear is a natural evolution for the company, as it already offers this service in the U.S. (and select international markets) for sneakers, watches, handbags, fine jewelry, and trading cards.

In the UK, the company also expanded the program to kids sneakers and certified recycled car parts.

eBay Authenticity Guarantee Categories Likely To Expand

This new Streetwear program appears to be the beginning of another significant expansion into more authenticity guaranteed categories.

Besides an expected international expansion of Streetwear to more markets, it recently also made an acquisition that should see further expansion of its authenticity guarantee program in specific fashion categories.

In Mid-May, the company acquired Certilogo, which offers digital solutions to combat counterfeits in the broader fashion industry to both brands and consumers.
